Sleaford Town                      v                Lincoln Utd ‘A’

League Cup Final

Lincoln Utd ‘B’                    2              Lincoln Utd ‘A’    5

Lincoln Utd ‘A’ can claim the inter club bragging rights after their convincing 5-2 win in the Lincolnshire Intermediate Football League Cup Final at Ashby Avenue. The difference between the two sides was certainly the finishing of man of match Josh Langtry who claimed a hat trick and his strong running caused problems for the Lincoln Utd ‘B’ defence all match.

The game started like a chess match with neither side really looking to dominate as they sounded each other out, the closest anyone came in the early exchanges was Sam Clucas for Lincoln Utd ‘B’ who cross shot just eluded the far Lincoln Utd ‘A’ post with keeper Jack Wilson scrambling across his goal. The opening goal on 27 mins came after a goal mouth scramble which had followed a Lincoln Utd ‘A’ free kick by David Coyde when shots from Kallum Smith & Ben Wyld were blocked by Lincoln Utd ‘B’ defenders but the ball fell invitingly for Chris Funnell to fire home. With half time fast approaching Lincoln Utd ‘B’ had chances to equalise through Alex Troughton and Sean Wright but both players saw their chances go agonisingly wide of the Lincoln Utd ‘A’ goal. The Lincoln Utd ‘B’ hearts must have been deflated as right on half time Josh Langtry gave Lincoln Utd ‘A’ a 2-0 lead as he shot into the corner of Craig Chamberlain’s net from 18 yards.

Lincoln Utd ‘A’ could have further extended their lead on 52 mins when Chris Funnell saw his shot come crashing back off the Lincoln Utd ‘B’ bar. This seemed to give Lincoln Utd ‘B’ the jolt they needed and on 58 mins they reduced the arrears when interplay between Sam Clucas & Alex Troughton led to the ball being fed to Joshua Bowden whose neat half volley found the top corner of the Lincoln Utd ‘A’ net. This should have been the signal for Lincoln Utd ‘B’ to mount a concerted challenged but Lincoln Utd ‘A’ responded in the right manner with Josh Langtrty claiming his second goal of the night as his flicked header from a Josh Schofield free kick nestled in the bottom corner of the Lincoln Utd ‘B’ goal. Lincoln Utd ‘B’ hit straight back as on 65 mins they again reduced the arrears to a single goal as Sam Clucas hit a free kick into the Lincoln Utd ‘A’ area which was headed down by Sean Wright for Alex Troughton to react the quickest and fire home.  On 70 mins Lincoln Utd ‘A’ again restored their two goal advantage when Josh Schofield played in Josh Langtry and he shot home to complete his hat trick. The scoring wasn’t finished yet as in this hectic 16 minute spell Lincoln Utd ‘A’ grabbed their fifth and final goal on the night through Josh Schofield who latched onto a Alex Knibbs through ball to fire home at the second attempt after his first effort had been blocked by Craig Chamberlain in the Lincoln Utd ‘B’ goal. As both sides looked for further goals the match drew to a close with Lincoln Utd ‘A’ claiming the trophy. Mention must be made of the way the game was controlled by Roger Greenfield whose firm but advantageous approach to the match made it an entertaining spectacular for the large crowd.

George Addlesee Shield Cup Final

Appleby Frodingham                5                Scawby                   3

Appleby Frodingham lifted the first trophy of the Lincolnshire Intermediate Football League season as they defeated near neighbours Scawby 5-3 in a cracking cup final played at Brigg Town.

Appleby Frodingham opened the brighter and chances fell to Paul Warriner and Luke Storrs but they failed to convert, however they went in front on 12 mins when the Scawby defence failed to clear a free kick and William Lowrie latched onto the ball to fire home from 8 yards. With Appleby Frodingham pushing for a second goal it was Scawby who should have equalized as a Matthew Fleming free kick was headed against the bar by Paul Reilly. This spurred Appleby Frodingham and they increased their lead on 23 mins when another free kick caused confusion in the Scawby defence and the ball fell to John Paul McIntyre who looped a header over the stranded Scawby goalkeeper Jamie Partridge. With Appleby Frodingham now dominant Scawby were struggling to get any cohesion into their game and on 32 mins Appleby Frodingham made it 3-0 when a long ball out of defence by Richard Precious was not dealt with by Matthew Cooke in the Scawby defence and Paul Warriner picked up the loose ball to go around the desperate dive of Jamie Partridge in the Scawby goal to roll the ball into an empty net.  With half time fast approaching it looked as though Appleby Frodingham would go in with a 3-0 lead but right on the stroke of half time they were hit by a sucker punch as Warren Carter pulled a goal back for Scawby. His strike partner Paul Whittingham caused concern down the Appleby Frodingham left and his cross fell to Warren Carter who stroked the ball into the bottom corner of Adam Smeaton’s net from 10 yards.

The goal just on half time certainly spurred Scawby and they started the second half the brighter of the two sides and chances fell to the strike partnership of Carter and Whittingham but they failed to convert. The Appleby Frodingham two goal advantage was however short lived as on 51 mins Scawby got right back into the match as a mix up in the Appleby Frodingham defence between defender James Coulbeck & goalkeeper Adam Smeaton saw Matthew Fleming reduce the arrears for Scawby.  The game then drifted along with Scawby looking to get back on level terms and Appleby Frodingham happy to play on the break. It was from one of these breaks on 70 mins that Paul Warriner nearly gave Appleby Frodingham a 4-2 lead but his shot just went just wide. As the game entered its final 10 minutes it suddenly exploded into a goal bonanza. Appleby Frodingham went into a 4-2 lead as John Paul McIntyre got his second goal of the night after the ball fell to him in the Scawby penalty area. Scawby didn’t let their heads drop and on 83 mins they were back in the match as a Matthew Fleming corner was headed home by Liam Dexter to bring the scores to 4-3 in Appleby Frodingham’s favour. With Scawby now pushing for the goal which would have taken the final into extra time, Appleby Frodingham sealed victory on 87 mins as a long ball saw Tom Robb and Paul Warriner exchange passes before the latter fired home for his second on the night and Appleby Frodingham’s fifth. This goal sealed the game and the remaining minutes passed with Scawby looking to grab another goal and Appleby Frodingham content to hold onto their two goal advantage. Special mention should be made of referee Mark Thomson who controlled the match well but always with a smile on his face which added to the entertainment that these two sides gave the large crowd. On the conclusion of the match Paul Warriner was named Man of the Match for his two goal performance and George Addlesee presented both sides with their momentoes.
